Data:  NCEP reanalysis monthly wind components (1000 hPa) on a 2.5 x 2.5 deg. lat/lon grid, and Reynolds and Smith Version 2 monthly SST anomalies.
Base Period for Climatologies:  1971-2000
Data Source:  NCEP, Environmental Monitoring Center

Description:
Top Plot:  The vectors indicate the latest vector anomaly in the monthly wind field at 1000 hPa.   The contours give the difference between the magnitude of the observed monthly wind and the magnitude of the climatological wind (in +/- m/s), with a contour interval of 1 m/s.  The shading indicates the latest monthly SST anomaly.

Middle Plot:  The vectors indicate the vector anomaly in the 1000 hPa monthly wind field in the previous month.   The contours give the difference between the magnitude of the previous month's observed monthly wind and the magnitude of the climatological wind (in +/- m/s), with a contour interval of 1 m/s.  The shading indicates the change in the monthly SST anomaly from the previous to the current month.

Bottom Plot:  Latest observed monthly SST (in °C) and full field vector winds at 1000 hPa. Contours indicate the monthly mean wind speed in m/s; the contour interval is 3 m/s.

NCEP is an acronym for the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, US.
